Program description

The Master in Animal Welfare gives you the opportunity to gain extensive knowledge in all aspects of the ethical use of experimental animals, with study tracks on Welfare in various animal species.

The Master programme in Animal Welfare is an 18-month, non-subsidised programme (see website for payment information) offered both full- and part-time. This post-graduate programme is aimed at graduates in veterinary medicine, with at least one year of relevant professional experience. During the programme you will acquire extensive knowledge in all aspects of ethical use of animals, skills in conducting independent scientific research using laboratory protocols and principles for development of alternative techniques.

The first 6 months of the programme will consist of courses and practicals; the remaining 12 months will be spent on a research project, which can involve laboratory animals, companion animals, farm animals, horses or wildlife. This includes research training in which you participate in one of the research programmes of the Institute of Veterinary Research(IVR).The project should cover one of the disciplines relevant to the field, and will involve study design, work planning, experiments, data collection and analysis; the results will be written up as a manuscript for publication in an international double- refereed journal and may serve as the start of a PhD thesis.
